Yale Transit wait times: SMS !

Hey guys!

Not all of us have smartphones, so that’s why Yale Transit allows us to check the bus schedules via text messaging (SMS)! It takes a little more planning than using the Transloc smartphone app, but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s really quick and easy to use!

Steps:

  1. Go to the Transloc site and find the 4-digit “stop code” for your stop. Be sure to check Northbound vs Southbound!
  2. Send a text to 41411 with the message YALE [code] (replacing [code] with the 4-digit code you just looked up).

Example:

  • Text YALE 3257 to 41411 for the College/Wall Northbound stop (Blue, Orange, and Red lines).

(Yale Transit has offered this service for a while, but it’s just started working again after not working since mid-May this summer.)

What I do is “lock” messages for stops I need in my SMS drafts folder — that way they don’t get deleted, although they might move to the Sent folder, depending on your phone — and then just re-send the message when I need to look up bus times. :-D

Recipe Management Software

Do you know where all of your recipes are? Mine are scattered throughout my gmail history, lost :/

No more! I’m going to start using Pepper Plate! Pepper Plate lets you import recipes from big websites like Epicurious and Allrecipes and also from blog posts. Then it helps you make shopping lists out of these saved recipes. Then it helps you cook by displaying the recipes in a beautifully formatted, standard way. On whatever devices you have. It’s amazing! :D

The entire sitch about Pepper Plate and its competitors is on Casey’s blog:

caseywatts:

…The rest of this post describes a lot of software that should just come together. Nothing does everything. For now I’d totally recommend trying out Pepper Plate and making beautiful food-babies with it. Pepper Plate doesn’t do quite everything, but it meets my needs best. The competitors Foodfolio and ZipList have some neat features too, but Foodfolio costs money eventually and Ziplist is kinda awkward to use.

Surfing the Internet? Language Immersion!

Here is a chrome extension which replaces some (or most) of the text on pages you’re reading with a translation into the language you’re studying.

This is like whoa. Now all of my procrastination-reading online will be productive for my Spanish education!
